As I recently walked by the old Blockbuster space on Mass. Ave., I recalled the buzz and excitement that swarmed through that office in the days leading up to last November’s presidential election: the windows plastered with Obama paraphernalia, the throngs of animated phone bankers, the vans shuttling eager volunteers off to New Hampshire.

On Monday, December 3, 2012, the City Council voted 8-1 to offer Assistant City Manager Richard Rossi a three-year contract to serve as City Manager, effective June 2013. After careful deliberation, I decided to vote with the majority in this matter, and I would like to explain my reasons for doing so.

Cambridge Hosts LGBT Town Hall

For the third time in eight years, the City of Cambridge hosted an LGBT town hall meeting — its purpose to provide a forum for community members to voice concerns and express interests directly to local government officials.

This year’s gathering was held Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at City Hall in the historic Sullivan Council Chamber. More than 50 people attended, with E. Denise Simmons, vice mayor, serving as host.

The Civic Unity Committee held a public meeting on July 10, 2012 beginning at 9:01 a.m. in the Sullivan Chamber.

The purpose of the meeting was to address the spike in summertime violence and safe neighborhoods.

We kick our Cambridge opening night off with Emerson College alum Eldar Rapaport's stunning drama August. Rapaport's first feature film has been gather acclaim in festivals all over the world. We are proud to celebrate our fourth year in Harvard Square with the area premiere of this beautiful film. Vice-Mayor Denise Simmons will open this year's Cambridge wing of the festival.

August star Murray Bartlett will be in attendance for a Q&A following the screening.
